XBox 360 Nyko Intercooler Overheat Problems
This is perhaps a strange thing for our basic computer help website, but it is a pretty serious matter to some people in the computer and electronics business. I couldn't find a head quarters for information on this problem, so I figured I would try to make one here. Of course we also hope it brings a few new folks to the website.
I bought an XBox 360 about a year after they had been released. Along with my purchase I bought an Intercooler by Nyko. This is a device that plugs into the power of the XBox and blows air past the back fans. The idea and advertised claim is that it would improve the life of my system and cool the inner components.
A couple of weeks ago, my XBox began giving me "the red ring of death," a series of indicator lights on the front that warn of hardware failure and/or overheating.
I was able to get past the problem by turning off the Intercooler. I told the guys at the local gaming store about the problem and they told me right out that it was a well documented problem on the Internet and it has caused many systems to fail.
After doing some research, I not only found that the problem is common, but it also voids the warranty of the XBox.
Even more research revealed that Nyko has not issued a recall even though the problem is an obvious fire hazard.
My XBox 360 is running fine as long as I have the Nyky Intercooler turned off, but as soon as I turn it back on, the system overheats.
I tried to remove the Intercooler, but it has melted into my XBox and it will not come out. I am hoping that it doesn't burn down my house. We always make sure that the XBox is turned off when we aren't in the room.
If you are an XBox user who has had similar problems, please post your comments. I would like to know how widespread this problem is.
I was going to post a bunch of links to sites where others are complaining about the problem, but you can find them all by typing in terms like, "Nyko xbox overheat" or "Nyko Fried xbox" or "Intercooler overheat problem" or Red Ring Nyko" into Google.

Thanks for keeping my xbox warm. i lost my job in august and spent the money i had on booze. I was going to take it easy for a change and play a little xbox. red light, cant pry that intercooler off with plyers. I'm stuck, this sucks, nyko is ruining my life. any suggestions on how to get that thing off? Any harder and im affraid im going to break the xbox itself. It's going to be a bad day.
the intercooler does not give you the three lights of death
i had a 360 now for 2 years, the elite with a intercooler when i first bought it, i got the ring of dead, and i shipped in to microsoft to repair it, and got it back a month later, now it works fine and with the intercooler the 360 hardly gets hot, i can leave it on for a day straight and it wont get hot, my friend in the other hand have a warrenty on his 360 with the store, and had to reture it 5 times and now he got his ring of dead again, and quit playing games systems, but he never had a intercooler, and never shipped in for a fix, i think its smart to shipped it in to get it fix, rater then getting a new one, but intercooler does not fuck up your 360.

Intercooler
I have a detailed post

With photos and detailed information
It is UPS you have to use to transport the unit back for repair.
They will try to get you to send the Consol itself, dont, tell them on the phone you will send the cable and the intercooler but not the 360 if your 360 is not damaged.
What happens is the connection between the 360 and Intercooler is slightly loose on the older styles and encased in a cheap plastic base. That plastic base overtime warms up enough to melt to the power cable.
But, what happens, is that one of the 6 prongs won't connect through anymore and you get the 3 red rings.
The power is fine to the 360 unit itself, and did not surge to cause this problem. The 360 does not need to be repaired.
I'm sending this crap in according to their instructions. But I called a few companies in my city and found a place selling official 360 power units for 99$ CAN - which was 'impossible' according to the Nyco genious.
Last time I use one of their products at any rate. I'm going to re-sell the new cable and intercooler as soon as they arrive.
Intercooler got me a new Xbox on the house
I purchased my 360 in Feb of 2007 and joined 6 good friends of mine online. 2 of them have had red ring of death claims already and said that after playing a long session you could 'fry and egg on your Xbox'. After the very first time I played it (about 4 hours straight), I couldn't believe how hot thing ran.
The next time I was at the store, I saw what would have been the answer to this concern. Now, I never assumed that it was okay for the 360 to run that hot and that may be what Nyko banks on; who knows. I have been using my intercooler for about 11 months and just ran into a problem last night. The 'red ring' (3 lights, not four) popped up and this has occcasionally happened before so I did as I always do and just disconnect everything. The power supply was literally stuck to my intercooler. With a little elbow grease, it "popped" right off and took one of the 6 plastic sleeves (that houses the metal connection to the intercooler) with it. This tiny plastic sleeve was stuck in the corresponding channel of the power supply and where it broke/melted off of was completely burnt.
I called (800) 4MY-XBOX and while on hold (after I told them what REALLY happened) I started sweating because I read warranty-void-this and 3rd-party-accesory-that. I knew I was going to eat the $80 for a new power supply ($80? Seriously Mr. Gates is that necessary? I paid $400 for the entire system; you do the math).
Low and behold the karma of my honesty paid off and Microsoft is not only replacing my power source but they are replacing the whole console too. They have only verbally said this over the phone, who knows what'll happen when they inspect it. This seems extremely weird, why do they want my console too? Why are they holding up the warranty on a product that I used a 3rd party accesory on? The only thing I could think of was that IF Microsoft had a lawsuit against Nyko, my 360/powersupply/intercooler serves as another piece of evidence. Am I missing something here?
MICROSOFT WARRANTY
You got lucky on that one. I had the exact same thing happen except they told me they fixed it and sent it back unrepaired. So now I'm waiting to hear from NYKO. At this point I'd like to sue someone.
Red lights of doom
I started getting a lot of red light errors and after further investigation found articles about the Nyko intercooler. Then I tried to remove it from my system and found that it was stuck. With a little work and prying, I was able to remove it. Then I found that the nyko unit had turned brown around the power connection. Since I removed it, I have had little or no errors with my xbox and can only hope that I dont have any permanent damage.
intercooler melted
the same thing happened to me and i hope i can get my xbox repaired it melted my intercooler to the back of my xbox and now it wont even turn on.
Nyko replaced my 360
I was finally successful. They did replace my 360 but they only sent me the console. That isn't really a problem, but it was an older system pre-HDMI so I am not sure what that means.
It also came in a premium box but all of the other pieces were gone. No controller, HD or documentation. I am betting - however not accusing - that they are eBay-ing the pieces to make up for the cost of all the consoles that they are replacing.
I did not have a problem with the shipping number they sent me for UPS, but they did give me a strange warning that their might be a problem. I have the phone number of the guy at Nyko who handled the problem. I will post it if you are not successful.
Do you want to hear something really funny? Too bad, I'm going to say it anyway.
They also sent me a brand new Intercooler in the box. I don't think I have any enemies bad enough to give it to.
It was tempting to use it and get a whole new 360 every time it melted, but I am afriad that my house will burn up with it next time.
Nyko scorched our 360 too :(
Hi there,
I have the same problem with our system and would like to know who you would suggest calling. The system will not even power on now after I removed the intercooler which was melted on! Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
KC
Intercooler Meltdown
Nyko's intercooler has permanetely attached itself to my step-sons 360 and on top of that has melted the inside of plug that plugs into said intercooler, so of course the 360 is in-op.
Step-son has contacted Nyko and they said to ship entire unit, x-box and the now melted onto x-box intercooler to them and that they would fix or replace the 360!
Well so far UPS or Fed-Ex will not accept the shipping number Nyco gave me. Trying to get ahold of them again to address this problem.
Wish me luck !
