We first saw this product at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in January 2004. This product impressed me immediately. Technology often times gets in the way of itself trying to be too cute or by enacting too many 'features' and options. The ControlKey [2] works so well because of its simplicity. The ControlKey comes in two flavors, a Corporate edition and a home edition. Both are designed to control Internet access and file access on your computers. We tested both units and were even more impressed.

Installation is easy and well explained. My only problem with the installation routine is that during installation you have to plug your ControlKey in every USB port on your system. This seems tedious when you have a system with 8 built in USB's and a hub with four more ports. However, in order for the security to work, you have to comply. The ControlKey only works, however, with Windows 2000 or XP.

Once installed, the home version allows you to lock the Internet when the key is removed from the computer and can also protect files or folders on your computer when the key is not inserted. The management of the key is as straightforward as the installation.

For families concerned about controlling Internet access on the family computer, this unit provides a reliable, simple solution. Computer users who use or travel with laptops may also find this device a great way to provide security to their files.
