In the past eighteen or so months, a small piece of technology has made a huge impact. I'm talking about the diminutive yet digitally spacious flash memory drives. Flash memory drives use the similar technology as digital camera memory. Also known as thumb drives or key drives, these little dynamos have been both dropping in price and increasing in capacity over the past year.
What makes these devices remarkable is that you can fit between 30 and 300 floppy disks worth of information on a single device. You Quickbooks, Quicken, or Microsoft Money users can use these devices to back up your financial data on a single disk versus juggling multiple slow floppy disks.
Two other advantages of flash drives are that the technology is 'solid state'...meaning no moving parts. No moving parts means better stability for your data. Flash drives also excel in speed. On average, flash drives can transfer data 20-40 times faster than a floppy disk.
One other note that I might add is that flash drives are much easier to use (and re-use) than CDR/W disks and drives. CDR (and soon DVD-R) disks still offer the best method of archiving large amounts of data, but flash drives excel at everyday use.
You can find flash drives at your local office supply or electronics store or take a look at our Easy Shopping pages [1] and buy yours online.
