Microsoft Word Users: Learn to Turn Off the Squiggles under your words

Submitted by HelpMeRick.com on December 30, 2005 - 12:18pm.
  • Application Tips

If you have ever used Microsoft Word, you are familiar with the little red and green squiggles that crop under your words. The red squiggle represents a misspelled word and the green arrow represents a grammatical error of some kind.

The purpose of these lines are to call attention to your miscues. In my opinion, they break up the flow of your thoughts as you type. I prefer getting my thoughts on paper (or the screen) and then clean them up afterwards. Microsoft designed them so that you can RIGHT click on them and see the suggestions they provide, but if you would like to get rid of them altogether, read the rest of this tip.

1. In Microsoft Word, click Tools from the menus
2. Click Options
3. Click the Spelling and Grammar tab
4. Uncheck the "'Check spelling as you type" option
5. Uncheck the "Check grammar as you type" options
6. Click OK

Even though the squiggles don't print, they still distract from the work at hand, so give this tip a try to hide the squiggles.

If this helped, consider buying me a beer or an Americano!
