MIGO Portable Software

Submitted by Rick on June 7, 2006 - 12:40pm.
  • Software

Road warriors who travel between corporate offices or even different family homes will appreciate this software. Migo allows computer users to 'synchronize' one or more computers to a USB flash drive. The software copies selected folders, files, email (must use Microsoft Outlook), Internet favorites (Internet Explorer only), and desktop settings.

Setup is pretty easy to follow but does take some time. By default, the software will backup everything in the My Documents folder. This can pose a problem if you have a lot of data in that folder because it will not fit on most flash drives. I would like to see the software walk the user through the selection process that is available in the options area of the program at startup. By navigating to the options and preferences area, a user can select specific file types, exclude directories and choose files by date.

Email and Internet favorites backup only works with Microsoft Outlook (not Outlook Express) and Internet Explorer. For corporate users, which seems to be Migo's target market, this works fine. To make this potentially helpful software available to more users, adding the option to backup and synchronize Outlook Express would be a welcome addition. Like the folder and file process, a user can select how much email and which folders in Outlook to backup. Migo also synchronizes Outlook's contacts, tasks, and notes.

Migo does a great job of bringing a computer users desktop to other computers. The focus is on corporate users and the setup and usage for this market shows. Even corporate users familiar with computers might appreciate a more streamlined installation and synchronization setup. I tried my Migo enabled flash drive in two different computers and it took a minute for me to figure out exactly how to access the synchronized files and email, but it did work well and can take the place of remote control operation of another computer in many cases.
