NTI Ripper

Submitted by Rick on May 15, 2006 - 1:37pm.
  • Software

NTI has a reputation for making tough projects (like backup) easy. With their second version of Ripper, I would have to say they have done it again. Ripper provides two basic functions; copying music from your CD collection to your hard drive (for later use on an iPod or other MP3 player) and converting existing music to a different format.

Windows and all MP3 players automatically come with their own 'ripping' software. So for many, NTI's Ripper may seem redundant. However for those who have large collections of CD's, the methodology seems laborious and changing some options can be time consuming. Enter NTI Ripper. This program offers very few options…a rarity in today’s over-inflated software. The options it does offer are simple and easy to change:

  • How much compression (64 kb/s to 320 kb/s) – changed with a simple “turn” of a dial
  • Format types (supports WMA, MP3, WAV, and OCG) – changed with a single button
  • Source of the files to convert – CD or Folder on your hard drive
  • Target output – where you want to save the converted files
  • Easy to use file name composer so that all your MP3’s look the same and are easy to identify
  • Execute button (RIP Now) – large push button on the screen

NTI Ripper’s simplicity is its beauty, but some new digital music users may find it so simple that they overlook some of its features. One feature available in all ripping programs is the ability to choose which songs you want to rip. With NTI Ripper, the feature is there, but it is done through a “Ctrl+Click” Window’s selection technique that escapes many basic computer users. I would have liked the NTI designers to sacrifice a little of their compact layout to offer the checkbox format most other rippers use.

If you use an Apple iPod, you might prefer iTunes integrated ripping software. Likewise with other 'syncing' MP3 players and software.

However, I do have to point out that if a Ripper user clicks the “?” to access the help section, they will be greeted with thorough step-by-step instructions complete with screen shots to explain Ripper’s function.

NTI Ripper does exactly what it purports to do; one button ripping (I ripped an entire album in under 6 minutes). For music lovers converting to the digital age from their CD’s, this program will make the process straightforward.
