Understanding and Cleaning Temp Files

Temporary files build up on our computers from normal every day use. Windows, the Internet and almost every other program we use create temporary file that allow the program to function. Sometimes these programs clean up after themselves and delete their temp files, but others don't. 

If we don't keep these temp files in check, they can result in slower and unstable computer performance. 

With Windows 98, Me, 2000 and XP versions of Windows, users can utilize the Disk Cleanup tool included in Windows. Here's how:

1. Click on Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools
2. Click on Disk Cleanup
3. From the options presented, Internet temp files, Windows temp files, and other non-essential areas of a hard drive can be cleaned up. Just check the boxes next to the items you want to clean (I recommend Temporary Internet files, Temporary Files, and Downloaded Program Files for sure)
4. Click OK

If you use Netscape, clean up of its temp files is done via the Edit | Preferences | Advanced menu.
