Can't read forwarded message attachments in Outlook
One of our callers today, Jeff, couldn't get forwarded emails to open if they were attachments. We believe this method may work to rectify the situation:
Use the following steps to use the Clear Cache button in Outlook:
1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Other tab.
2. Click Advanced Options.
3. In the Advanced Options box, click Custom Forms.
4. In the Custom Forms box, click Manage Forms.
5. In the Forms Manager box, click Clear Cache.

If you have Google Desktop
If you have Google Desktop installed, try uninstalling it. Google Desktop - for some reason - prevents several different types of email attachments from opening.

Can't open attached messages
I'm in Outlook 2003 and I cannot open attached messages, w .msg extension. None of the above suggestions had any effect.
I try dragging the attached messages from the original e-mail to a different folder, but they don't appear in that folder. I can "save attachements" to a different folder on the disc, but when I drag them back to Outlook they don't open. I can't open them with WordPad or any other editor.
I've also inspected Tools>email scan options, but nothing seems to be applicable.
Any other suggestions?
TIA,
Ross
Try renaming frmcache.dat
I was just supporting an employee with this issue - could not open .msg as a file attachment in Outlook 2003. Also, the attachment showed the generic Windows icon instead of the usual Outlook yellow envelope icon. However if the attachment was saved to desktop, it could then be opened.
Tried clearing the form cache per another post here, but that did not fix.
Then I noticed that right-clicking on emails in Outlook was also not working.
Solution:
1. Closed Outlook
2. Browsed to C:\documents and settings\%username%\local settings\application data\microsoft\FORMS
3. Renamed FRMCACHE.DAT to FRMCACHE.DAT.OLD
4. Re-launched Outlook and the .msg attachment was now viewable, and right-clicking on emails was restored.

Outlook - same problem with attachments including .eml
This is seriously bugging me. I'm running Outlook 2003 11.8206.8202 SP3 on a Dell DIM4700 with XP Pro 2002 SP2. I can't open .eml files no way no how. They arrive as attachments when, for instance, my friend forwards me a ticket confirmation from The Daily Show.
I'm also running Norton AV 15.0.0.58. I can't find anything in either product that has any effect on the problem.
The previously posted cache clearing had no effect.
Thanks for any more ideas,
Chris
Outlook - same problem with attachments including .eml
I uninstalled Windows Desktop Search and now I can open the email attachments. Clearing cache had no effect for me either. I tried changing association of .eml in file types to Outlook (from outlook express), that didn't work either. Can't explain why uninstalling Windows Desktop Search worked, but tried it b/c of all the problems I had previously with Google desktop search. I'm running Outlook 2007/XP Professional.
When all else fails with .eml
Start Notepad from the Accessories menu, then drag your .eml file into it. You will see all the coding behind the email also, but you can delete that and read your email.
Usually, you can also start Outlook Express, and choose File --> Open from there to read .eml's as well.
Microsoft has this solution, but it doesn't always work.
How to open .eml files
1. Save the .eml attachment
2. Change the .eml to .email
3. Double-click on the attachment
4. Write your friends and family and tell them to quit using Incredimail
Incredimail
I'll let Jon Stewart know that you disapprove of Incredimail too.
In the meantime, renaming the file got me this:
"Windows cannot open this file
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart TICKET CONFIRMATION.email
To open this file Windows needs to know what program created it [etc."
clearing the cache didn't
clearing the cache didn't solve the problem for me. Also I can't open EML attachments either.
McAfee error messages
My new Gateway computer came pre-loaded with McAfee. I did not want this program and it's pop-ups became annoying. Finally, in frustration, I removed McAfee through the add/remove program in the control panel.
Then my problems really started. I started getting lots of error messages. I then did a search on McAfee and found lots of entries. I deleted those and then went to regedit and did a search there. Again I found a hundred or more entries. I deleted those also except for 5 entries in the legacy. The registry refuses to let me delete those. I re-booted into safe mode and tried again. It still refuses to let me delete them.
The result is that everytime I open Microsoft Outlook to check e-mails, I get the following error messages:
The add-in “C:\Program~1\McAfee\SPAMIC~1\McMapi.dll” could not be installed or cached.
The add-in “C:\Program~1\McAfee\SPAMIC~1\mskolplg.dll” could not be installed or cached.
The add-in “C:\Program~1\McAfee\SPAMIC~1\vsolplg.dll” could not be installed or cached.
I have to sequentually delete each one before I can access my e-mails. I feel strongly that the remaining entries in the registry are causing my problem.
Are you aware of such a problem? Do you have any recommendations for deleting them from the registry?
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
