Internet Filtering: A non-Vista article

I have said enough about Vista that I feel everyone has been forewarned. So, today I am going to write about Internet filters.

A client today wanted to filter the Internet so her kids couldn't visit MySpace any more. I did some quick research and found a great website comparing all of the popular Internet filters.

I downloaded and installed the full trial version of ContentProtect and I was very impressed. It was easy to setup custom filters for different users and each user was given their own user name and password.

The filter blocked sites in given categories such as guns, drugs, porn, games, intimate apparel, and for some reason education was on the list. We didn't filter that one.

Whenever you try to get into a site that is blocked in any browser, a message pops up telling you that the site is blocked, but it gives you the ability to request an override in case the filter is set too strong. The request goes to the administrator via email and changes can be made if necessary.

Content administrator also has the ability of limiting access to certain programs such as chat programs, video games or financial software.

Based on the quick look that I had at the program and the ease of setup and use, I recommend ContentProtect for any parent looking for a way to keep their kids safer online.

ContentProtect costs $40 and must be renewed yearly.
