Are you missing the Menu bar in Internet Explorer 7?

IE 7 Menu BarActually, Microsoft designed the new browser that way so that there is more room for browsing. However, if you want the menu bar (the one with File, Edit, View, Favorites, etc) back, follow these steps:

  1. Start Internet Explorer
  2. Press and release the Alt key on your keyboard
  3. The menu bar will be visible, Click the View menu option
  4. Click Toolbars
  5. Click Menu Bar

That will do it. You can't move the menu bar above the new address bar, but at least it will be visible and usable from now forward. For those of you who just want quick access to the menu bar, but don't mind that it is missing, remember the Alt key trick to get the menu bar to appear when you need it.

Can't make changes to settings in IE ?

Submitted by Smart Computer User on August 24, 2008 - 11:04am.

Users should be aware that some security type programs can be set to stop changes being made to your settings in IE.
Not really the likes of displaying the Menu bar and such but settings like changing Homepage and search toolbars ...... keep this in mind when you try to make changes that won't "stick".

Have you tried restarting the computer?

Submitted by Rick on July 23, 2008 - 11:06pm.

try that and my tip about resetting Internet Explorer. OR, you could scrap IE altogether, and use Firefox!

FIXED IT!

Submitted by Smart Computer User on July 4, 2008 - 5:01pm.

Tried what "Smart Computer User" did...I pointed my cursor to an open area on the Tab bar, Right Clicked, checked "Links", then it 'released' (unchecked) the Menu Bar selection. I then Right Clicked again and selected Menu Bar, and deselected Links. Thanks Smart Computer User!

Missing menu bar. No restore up/down or close buttons in ie6

Submitted by Smart Computer User on June 24, 2008 - 12:38pm.

Please help
Suddenly, my menu bar has disappeared, along with the restore up/down and close "cross". I now have to put my cursor where the close "cross" should be, and a black box with a "x" in it now appears instead. Any ideas anyone as to how I can get my menu bar etc. back to normal. Could it have been anything to do with automatic updates downloading SP3 yesterday? That is when they disappeared. How much of a nightmare is Microsoft!!?? I actually uninstalled SP3 today. Tried F11 and Alt keys, but nothing changes.

Possibly due to your updates

Submitted by Rick on June 24, 2008 - 9:52pm.

If you didn't change anything else on your computer, then yes, the problem could be due to your recent update to SP3. It might have updated a video driver your system didn't like. Check that first, and if that doesn't work, you might want to use System Restore to roll back prior to the update.

GRRRRRR....

Submitted by Smart Computer User on June 23, 2008 - 4:38am.

Nothing works! I have XP, not Vista. There is nothing to right click on in the tool bar at all. It just gives "restore" and "minimize" as my options. And the alt key does nothing. Why did my menu just up and disappear? I am so frustrated!!!!

Menu bar greyed out

Submitted by Smart Computer User on June 1, 2008 - 8:24am.

My menu bar often 'greys out', all text is greyed out and clicking file, view, favorites, etc. does nothing. Minimizing and maxinizing the browser brings them all back, but it's driving me crazy!

Menu Bar ticked but doesn't display

Submitted by Smart Computer User on February 7, 2008 - 5:22am.

Tried the method above and it worked:

Try right-clicking on the IE7 bar that displays the "home" icon and then tick "Links". This will then display the Menu Bar. Now you can untick the "Links" and the menu bar should stay displayed - or you can go to tools and tick it to display it.

Kind regards

Same Problem!

Submitted by Smart Computer User on April 10, 2008 - 1:39pm.

In my case, i had the same problem of no menu bar. When i right clicked on the tool bar, it showed that the menu bar was checked. I could not uncheck it either, it remained checked no matter what i did; and still no menu bar.

Due to this post, i right-clicked on the tool bar, clicked 'links', and the 'links' bar appeared, but best of all the 'menu bar' item was now unchecked!

I then right-clicked, clicked 'menu bar' to check it, clicked 'links' to uncheck it, and finally got what i wanted: the menu bar to appear.

This was a lot harder than it should be; it boggles the mind...

What program?

Submitted by Rick on February 1, 2008 - 7:54am.

Depends entirely on your email program you use. First place to look, however, is the Preferences or Options of your program and then the "Read" or "Receive" section.

Windows Mail

Submitted by Rick on February 2, 2008 - 11:02pm.

Web based mail generally has fewer options than using a program like Outlook Express or Thunderbird. Windows Live Mail (HotMail) options are extremely limited. If you didn't see it there, then you can't do it.

Try your keyboard

Submitted by Smart Computer User on January 4, 2008 - 9:55am.

Perhaps the problem is the keyboard. Some wireless models have messed with the "f" keys, and they may not be working correctly for you. You may have to restore the functions.

Alt does nothing...

Submitted by Smart Computer User on November 14, 2007 - 2:28pm.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled IE7 several times to no avail. I still have no menu bar whatsoever, no matter what key I press (F11, Alt, Control, etc etc etc). I've tried the hotfix and editing the registry to include the:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001

And still nothing. I have no third party toolbars or applications. The "xmllite.dll" and "ieui.dll" are both in the System32 folder. Right clicking or left clicking anywhere near where the menu bar should be does absolutely nothing. I have un-labeled buttons for back/forward, refresh, stop, and the search bar... and that's it.

I have to use IE for one website that I need to visit on a regular basis because it uses iframes, but otherwise I've totally lost faith in Internet Explorer and started using Firefox instead.

I actually prefer IE over other browsers, but it won't work!

Hide other toolbars

Submitted by Smart Computer User on January 23, 2008 - 1:19pm.

Do you have other toolbars? My Menu Bar was not displaying despite the option being checked. I tried unchecking it and checking again and that didn't help. I finally unchecked the Windows Live Toolbar and magically the Menu Bar came back. I suppose that the Windows Live Toolbar was somehow displaying over top of the Menu Bar. You may have to try with all other toolbars you may have installed.

I hope that helps

You can lead a horse to water...

Submitted by Rick on January 2, 2007 - 12:11am.

The tip works PERFECTLY as advertised. Please carefully read and execute the steps for success. You can also try RIGHT clicking on a blank part of the toolbar then choose Menu bar from the options as an alternative. Or, you can click the Tools option from the right side of the screen and choose Menu bar. All three work perfectly. We guarantee the steps in our tips, not the execution of the steps.

Bummer for me. ..

Submitted by Smart Computer User on January 27, 2008 - 9:26pm.

Nope, None of those three steps are working for me. In fact, I can't even 'un-select' the menu bar yet the menu still won't appear. I am using a brand new Sony Vaio with Vista OS. Could Vista be the problem? Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Finally got it to work

Submitted by Smart Computer User on January 30, 2008 - 11:31am.

Try this. Try right-clicking on the menu bar and clicking "Links". For me, this unlocked the "Menu Bar" checkmark. Then I turned off the "Links" and was able to bring the "Menu Bar" back on.
