AVG Free Antivirus 8.0 Upgrade – Video Tip

AVG released a new version of their popular AVG Anti-virus on Wednesday. An alert web site visitor alerted us to this yesterday, and I immediately downloaded and have been testing it since then. Here are some important facts you need to know about the upgrade.

  • Do NOT use the Upgrade feature in your current version of AVG Free, as it will take you down the road to their pay version. The pay version is good, but if you plan to stay with the free version, use the link below to get it.
  • Your current AVG Free version (7.5) will be supported only through the end of May after which you will need to upgrade to this new version 8.0
  • The new version is only for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users. AVG will stop supporting Windows 95, 98, and Me later this year. For you folks using the older operating systems, I would suggest uninstalling AVG and using Avast.
  • The new AVG Free version includes not only their anti-virus product, but also their anti-spyware product. This doubles your protection and helps protect your computer even better. My philosophy for keeping Windows computer safe applies more now than ever:  Use Firefox as your browser, keep the Windows firewall enabled, and use AVG Anti-virus, and that should be all most people need.
  • You do NOT need to uninstall your current version of AVG before installing this one. Watch the video below for complete instructions.

I think that covers the basics, feel free to leave comments below and ask any questions you might have about this exciting new upgrade for AVG users. Click here to download the free upgrade to AVG antivirus 8.0 (for home users), it will bring you directly to the AVG download page saving you time and confusion. Then watch my short video below for exact installation and configuration instructions.

UPDATE

If you are having problems updating or getting AVG 8.0 to work properly, try this:

1. Double-click AVG
2. Double-Click Update Manager
3. Un-check the Start Automatic Updates box
4. Click the Save Changes button
5. Check the Start Automatic updates box
6. Click the Save Changes button
7. Click the Update now button

If that doesn’t work in your case, use one of the links above to download a fresh copy of AVG, then reinstall using the REPAIR function that will be presented to you during the install.

I need to install an AVG free antivirus on my home computer which is not connected to the internet. How do I go about it without being asked for the server, password, username etc?

    • Rick says:

If you are using Windows Vista or 7, use the Microsoft Security Essentials product instead…you can download it from another computer and transfer it to a USB drive or CD. If you are using Windows XP, use the AVAST antivirus. I have links and instructions to both of them in the right sidebar. Make sure to uninstall AVG before installing these products. Good luck.

      • richard says:

May I please have the link to download the avast free antivirus as well as the link to download updates which I will have to carry home on a USB drive.

        • just me says:

i have a question , i been reading the comments, maybe you know what my problem is here, my Avg window pops up , saying to close my internet explorer, it is using too much memory ,i dont seem to understand, thanks for your help

        • Rick says:

If you push Ctrl+Alt+Del on your keyboard, you will probably see that there is an item labeled: iexplore in the Processes list. That is Internet Explorer and something is causing it to hang up and not close properly. RIGHT click and End Process on it to close it out. Then try out my tip here to try and solve the problem: Reset Internet Explorer

Thanks so much for your easy-to-understand instructions on how to upgrade my AVG. I watched your video first, and then followed your instructions, and voila! Done! Thanks for making it so simple. Kathy

  3. Anonymous says:

AVG 8.0 adds a firewall. Days after I installed the upgrade, I discovered my computers couldn’t “see” each other. After a frustrating week of reinstalling all parts of the network and software, then going to MS and Linksys Knowledge Base and Discussion Groups, I finally stumbled across the AVG Users Interface and noticed that there was a firewall there. The source of my problem was that I had default configured AVG as a standalone computer. Either changing the setting to Local Area Network or disarming the firewall succeeded in allowing the LAN to work again.

  4. Rick says:

The firewall is in the pay version only of AVG. The Free version (this tip) has just anti-virus and anti-spyware.

I’m glad that you got your network working again, though.

  5. Anonymous says:

Thanks for the video – not quite as easy as I thought it would be.
Installation wizard said I had an outdated Roxio CD & DVD program that I should update. Couldn’t figure out how to do that, so I uninstalled the thing, since I don’t use it.
I deleted the old 7.0 logo from desktop and the other AVG logo which I hope was the installation you said I could delete.
I don’t have a little logo down at the bottom anymore – maybe it will come back the next time I restart – I have laptop, so I shut it off at night. I think you recommend that.
I’ll watch to see if you have anymore to say about this.
    Thanks again.

  6. Anonymous says:

can you run both of them at the same time?

  7. Rick says:

Should be no problem running them together.

I’ve noticed a slowdown in my system since I installed avg 8 – could it be the anti-spyware? If so, I haven’t figured out how to disable it.

    Lynn

  11. Rick says:

Hmmm…I’m not sure, but I actually think this new version is a hair faster than the old one. I don’t think it lets you disable the anti-spyware scanner.

  12. Anonymous says:

Since I upgraded to the 8.0, when I try to get on line by double clicking firefox, I have to sign in to MSN Live ID first. Also, it never takes my password the first time – have to repeat. And it won’t save it. And I think it has slowed my computer. Did I do something wrong?

  13. Rick says:

You could try uninstalling and try again. I haven’t had any problems.

  14. Anonymous says:

I have the AVG paid version but understand that it comes with a firewall now. I already had Zone Alarm’s firewall and also use Spy Sweeper. Will I be all right or is there too much overlap? It seems like all these companies are combining everything and I just want to use the best, not an all-in-one product if some of the product is not that good or am I wasting money in buying separate products?

  15. Anonymous says:

after i run a scan it tells me no threats were found, then it shows me a list of files that couldn’t be scaned.why is that can you please help me out

  16. Rick says:

Some protected Windows files can’t be scanned and those are the ones you see. It shouldn’t be more than about 5-6 files.

  17. Anonymous says:

it’s me again.you said it shouldn’t be more than 5 or 6 files. it told me 94 files were unable to scan

  18. Rick says:

Clean out your temporary files using one of the cleanup utilities and then run your scan in Safe Mode. This might get you over the hump.

  19. Anonymous says:

    Rick,

I just installed AVG8 on my 2nd pc even though I have Norton Anivirus-but now I can’t get my norton to work. I like the avg to scan individual programs quicker than Norton, but like Norton to scan weekly because I feel it is more advanced. Does AVG have s.thing to do with my Norton not working or can they “co-exist”?

  20. Rick says:

Multiple spyware programs usually play nice together, but NEVER install 2 or more antivirus systems at the same time.

  21. Anonymous says:

I have tried to download the new AVG 8.0 and before it finishes, the server shuts down. Any suggestions? I have Juno as my web browser.
    Thanks.

  22. Rick says:

Dial-up users will not be able to successfully download AVG because of the size of the file. You will need to download it via a flash drive or CD on a friend’s computer or library that has high speed.

  23. Anonymous says:

Install a download manager that will restart a download from the point of failure. I won’t recommend one, because I use the wget program, which isn’t a manager. You run it in a cmd window. That may be a little geeky for most people here.

Maybe Rick could recommend a good manager.

  24. Rick says:

Get high speed Internet or download large files using a high speed connection from a friend or public computer like a library. Even with a download manager, dial-up connections would take more than four hours. It just isn’t feasible.

  25. Anonymous says:

Using XP Home with SP2, AVG 7.5 worked wonderfully. Upgraded to 8.0 and it kept finding “warnings” which turned out to be the blocked applications from SpywareBlaster. After ignoring the “warnings” I noticed my computer getting increasingly slower. Last night after an AVG update, I scanned, then noticed that it had moved my Windows/Sys32/config file and several others to the virus vault. It then said that a reboot was needed to finish the process, and did I want to reboot now? I clicked “no” but shortly after, shut down my PC. When I tried to start up this morning, all my config files were gone, Windows wouldn’t/couldn’t start, I was unable to even repair from the CD. Had to do a complete reformat! Spent all day re-downloading updates & programs (NOT AVG!) Needless to say, I am not at all happy with AVG!!! Users beware! I know of several folks who are now having the increasing slow-down that I experienced before the config files were deleted.

  26. Rick says:

Not sure what happened in your case, but I can tell you from using 8.0 since April and installing it on literally hundreds of machines, that is NOT typical. In fact, I think the new AVG, properly configured, works much better than its predecessor. Please keep in mind that the new AVG offers both anti-spyware and anti-virus now…I recommend NOT using any other anti-virus or anti-spyware product with it.

  27. Anonymous says:

Every time AVG updates, it says to restart the computer. I do so and log back on and it updates and says to restart again. I have restarted my computer like 5 times and it keeps saying restart. I have the version: 8.0.134

  28. Rick says:

You can probably solve this quickly by uninstalling AVG, downloading a new installation file, and then reinstalling.

  29. Anonymous says:

After upgrading from the Free AVG 7.5 to the free 8.0 my XP computer won’t start. It gets as far as the two-toned blue screen that says “Windows is Starting…” and my icons appear and the mouse cursor moves around. I went into Safe Mode and went back to a 7.5 day… worked fine. Updated to 8 and had the same problem. Then I went to Safe Mode and uninstalled AVG 8 Free and my computer works fine! But I don’t have any virus protection! What’s up wit dat?

  30. Anonymous says:

Guess I don’t need to wait for a reply. Although my particular problem was not addresed, I used your advice:

DO NOT click the blue button “Download AVG Free 8.0″

INSTEAD click the hyperlink “Download AVG Free 8.0 (AVG server)”

…and now AVG Free 8.0 is working fine! Thanks

  31. Anonymous says:

same thing is happening with my system (winxp). (Started after a system restore back to July 9th. Don’t know if that is a co-incidence or not.) But uninstalling, and then re-installing AVG8 does not solve the “restart after every update” problem.
    Kevin

  32. Anonymous says:

Also my installation started with this behaviour; it worked fine earlier. If I click on the database, I see thaht the latest version of it is from: 9th of July! On the GRISOFT site it says (FAQ):

1444:Repeated restart after AVG updateAfter a recent major program update, you may encounter a repeated request for restart displayed by AVG. This situation occurs when some AVG files can not be updated correctly. The easiest solution in this case is running repair installation of your AVG:

Open the Download section of our website and click on the name of the product you are using.
Click on Download AVG now (paid version).
Choose to download the file to your computer (i.e. do not run it immediatelly) and select a target location, e.g. your Desktop.
After the file is downloaded, please locate it and double-click on it to start the installation process.
Proceed with the installation. When prompted, select Repair installation.
Finish the installation procedure and restart your computer.
In case of any further problems, please contact our Technical Support.

So, does yjs mean that users of FREE cannot use this repair???

  33. Anonymous says:

I got rid of my Norton stuff completely after reading all over the web about how it slows everything down. I downloaded AVG FREE and all was WONDERFUL! Like having a new computer. BOY was I happy! Suddenly (like everyone else it seems) the AVG is constantly asking for a restart after updating, and it is never resolved. There is no way to use the “repair” function that GRISOFT recommends in their FAQ’s because it requires a paid license number.

It seems that everyone has this problem (since the beginning of July at least) and nobody has an answer.

    HELP ME RICK! :-)
    Denise

  34. Anonymous says:

    Thanks Rick!
I did what you said, including using those instructions…so far so good!
What would we do without this forum? :-) Denise

  35. Anonymous says:

Hello! This is exactly what happened after the full system scan was done (July 14). After that WinXP won’t reboot. By the way, these system files were NOT infected – they were just reported as LOCKed in the scan log.
They way out is to repair the installation using Windows recovery console, and roll back to a recent system restore point.

I recommend not using system scan until this bug is fixed, and to create system restore points daily – just in case.

    Alexander

  36. Rick says:

Sorry to hear that you had that problem with AVG, but it seems to be a unique issue. I’ve installed AVG 8 on probably 50+ computers since it came out and know that many of my customers and web site visitors have upgraded on their own, and this is the first I’ve seen of such a serious problem.

  37. Anonymous says:

I’m happy with my system – ZoneAlarm, AVG, AdAware to scan periodically, NoScript for stopping nasties on the net, and Spybot Search and Destroy for antispyware. Now, Spybot has a great feature called TeaTimer which monitors ANY changes that are initiated any programs for the Registry. When it detects such a change it asks whetjer you want the change to be made or not. This is a BRILLIANT feature. Besides its use for stopping malware it also stops “friendly” programs from messing with your system – eg it stops my OE from putting the messenger stuff in. So, Rick, can I get AVG 8 with ONLY the AV or do I get forced to abandon Spybot. If I have to abandon Spybot then I’ll abandon AVG. If I do, I guess you’re recommending Avast?

    Thanks

I’m just downloaded the new avg free 8.0 yesterday and installed it. it seems to run smoothly until i do the whole computer scan. It kept on shutting down my computer when it’s scanning my computer half way. I tried it for 5 times but it’s still happening. I’ve checked the additional scan settings and i did not choose to turn off my computer after finish scanning. My laptop just kept on shutting itself down before finishing the scan. Can you please tell me what is the problem? thank you very much…

  39. Rick says:

More than likely AVG is running into either a file that is trying to hide or a file that is in use and not happy about being searched and scanned, so restart your computer into Safe Mode (push F8 as the computer starts) and start and run your scan there.

  40. Anonymous says:

    I have Vista.
I’ve had AVG free since I got this laptop last year, and have tried downloading AVG free 8.0 numerous times and I continue to encounter various issues each time.

Most recently, it’s been telling me that the AVG downloader has stopped working, followed by another telling me that AVG itself is no longer working. I contributed that to the fact that 7.5 was probably no longer available, so, foolishly, I uninstalled the program, thinking I could just replace it with 8.0.

Now I can get up to that part where I save the file, but it saves it as two seperate files, one called, “avg_free_stf_en_8_138a1332″ with a little icon of what appears to be just a generic Vista window, and the other called, “avg_free_stf_en_8_138a1332.exe.part” with an icon of a blank page with the top right corner folded down.

Clicking the first one brings up a message reading, “C:\Users\Jordyn\Desktop\avg_free_stf_en_8_138a1332.exe is not a valid Win32 application.”
Clicking the second one bring up a window saying it can’t open the file because it doesn’t know what program to use to open it.

Am I receiving these messages because I uninstalled 7.5? If so, how do I solve this problem, seeing as there doesn’t seem to be any way to get 7.5 back?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I’m glad I found you… lots of good info here!

I have a very slow dial up connection (in a rural area), so I had a friend download AVG Free 8.0 #138 for me. I transferred it to my computer and it started installing ok.

First problem was that it didn’t like my old version of Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0, and it told me to download a new version. I installed that, and it still gave me the same message, so I skipped over it the second time.

MAIN PROBLEM: It says my Windows operating system doesn’t support all of its functions, so it cannot continue.

I have Windows XP Pro, I think with SP2 installed (I know it was downloaded). I can’t find where to see the actual running version of XP. This computer (laptop) was my late husband’s, and I am not familiar with its history.

I checked to make sure the network connections were disabled, since AVG says it doesn’t work on networks (I don’t have a network). That didn’t help.

Can you help me? I’m online with no virus protection at this time, so I’m a little nervous about it.

    Thanks,
    P.G.

  42. Rick says:

To find what version of Windows you are using, RIGHT click the My Computer icon and click properties to reach the System Properties which will tell you which version you are using.

    Have XP w/ sp3, and have been upgraded to AVG 8.0 for as long as it has been available. Nightly auto updates were working for about 3 or 4 weeks then I begain to notice the Tray Icon was still open (second one) and when I clicked on it- Objects scanned: 1,566,613;
    Total threats = 0
Elaps time – Now over 22 hours
    Currently scanning file system
    Current Object, C:\winter08/snowbunny4.jpg

Have had and still do Zonealarm 7.0.483.000
Like the others, the free version is not high on the grissoft list for assistance. Can not close out AVG scan so the next one will come in without a reboot- or a Control Alt Del. dissabeling move. Gotta be a better answer,
    BillS

  46. Rick says:

Run a disk clean up and then one scan in Safe Mode of Windows and see if things progress quicker. From your stats, it sounds like you just have a lot of files on the computer. Also, I recommend that folks set their AVG to scan in the middle of the night and leave their computers on once or twice per week over night…no need to scan more than that. Good luck.

  47. Anonymous says:

The last time the automatic update function of AVG8 ran, it failed to complete, with the error: “A .bin file is missing”. Any idea how to fix this? I am running Windows XP Pro SP3.

I re-installed AVG, and even tried a repair installation. Neither fixed the problem. Unfortunately, something erased all restore points prior to today, so I can’t try a system restore.

  48. Anonymous says:

Hmm seems I’m not the only one missing a .bin file. This just happened 16AUG08 17:03 MDT have not checked my backup yet.

  49. Anonymous says:

Same here. Probably glitch at Grisoft.

  50. Rick says:

Your computers are still protected and AVG will fix the .bin problem. It appears that part of one of their updates was corrupted or in conflict with Windows. Grisoft cleans up these problems pretty quickly…hang in there and don’t panic.

  51. Anonymous says:

    Hi Rick,
I hope you can help me. I had AVG 7.5 with zero issues whatsoever. I was notified I had to upgrade to AVG 8.0 and I did. It doesn’t give me the option to set the updates to update everyday. It also keeps showing the anti virus and anti spam is not updated. I keep trying to update it and it will not update. I have uninstalled it and cleared my cache and did a clean up on the computer and then re-installed. It is still doing the same thing. I have try this twice and no help. Please help me figure this out. I’m really aggrevated with AVG right now. I wish they wouldn’t of upgraded it. :(

  52. Anonymous says:

Thanks for the hand-holding. I was considering restoring from backup; which is now not necessary, as Grisoft has fixed the problem.

    C:documentsandsettings\User\MyDocuments\AVG\avg_free_stf_en_8_138a1332.exe is not a valid Win32 application

    Thanks

  56. Rick says:

Are you leaving the computer on? If so, does it go into a sleep mode that might be preventing the scan?

  57. Rick says:

Are you downloading via a dial-up connection? If not, you might already have an infection that is preventing the installation of AVG. You might need someone to look at your computer for you.

  58. Rick says:

Search my site for “safe mode” and you will find the answer you seek.

  59. Anonymous says:

After updating AVG 8.0 in the mornings, the restart the computer message appears. Upon restarting, it will run an update again and the same message to restart the computer appears. Is there a way to break the loop?

Remove and reinstall AVG from scratch and you will get out of this annoying loop.

  62. Rick says:

Make sure you are trying to make those changes under Tools –> Advanced in AVG. If so, then yes, you might have to uninstall and reinstall.

  64. Rick says:

I haven’t seen any symptoms like yours with the new AVG. You might want to uninstall and reinstall it to insure it installed properly, but otherwise I can’t think of any reason that AVG would cause these symptoms.

I have the same issue. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it did not fix the problem. Note that during the reinstall a dialogue box popped up saying a config error occurred, but the install still completed

  69. Rick says:

You might need to use Windows System Restore to set your computer back to before you installed AVG the first time, then reinstall AVG.

  70. Anonymous says:

I was very happy with the old AVG Free, but the new 8.0 isn’t my favorite! I see some of the same issues here in this forum as I’ve been experiencing. I’ve learned to live with a couple of them, but the one that drives me nuts is that the new AVG scheduler doesn’t have an option for ‘waking up’ the computer from sleep mode for updating and scanning. I have created my own Scheduler tasks, pointing to the AVG update and scanning modules and checking off the ‘wake up’ box. I’m hoping this will fix the problem.

    Any experience with this?

    Thanks, CC

  71. Rick says:

I agree that AVG 8 is a little rougher around the edges than previous versions were, but overall I still haven’t found a better product…and I’m always looking.

To get around your problem, open up the AVG settings, click Schedules then Scheduled scan and check the box that says “Run even if computer is in low power mode”.

  72. Anonymous says:

I’ve got the same problem where Continue and Stop were the only options (and did nothing when I clicked them). I just found any old small file on my desktop and right-clicked to ‘Scan with AVG Free’. This forced scan seemed to fix it.

  73. Anonymous says:

I have uninstalled and re-installed AVG 8.0.something several times.
It seems to be OK for a day or so, then it says that the email scanner is not active. When I look at the advanced settings, it says that there are no plug ins.
I can’t figure out how to fix it.
Also, when I install AVG it says that it detects an old version of Roxio Easy CD Player and that I should go to Roxio for an update.
Roxio says that my version is no longer supported and that I should buy a new version. Funny thing is, I did a search of my computer and can’t find Roxio anywhere.
    Help!!!

  75. Rick says:

One of the first things some spyware programs to to your computer is disable the Windows Security Center. Download, update, and run a full system scan with SpyBot Search & Destroy to repair this issue. Your AVG is fine without being detected by Windows, but to get the functionality back, run the SpyBot scan.

Anyone else having a problem with (automatic) Avg 8 free, updating?

I have it set to update at 3am daily. The past few days it’s been coming up with the following error:
“Connection to update server failed, go to avg website”
When I attempt to update at the site, it basically sez to go back to my program, as follows:

“It is strongly recommended that you perform all updates from the AVG interface. The program can distinguish between full and differential updates; while this page offers only full update files for download.

Important notice for AVG Free Users

The listed program updates should not be used for the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. AVG Free users can perform the update directly from within the program, or download updates from AVG Free Advisor website.”

    Anyone?
    Thanx!

I posted above at 1:24 pm. I’m still unable to update.
    This is the url:
    http://guru.avg.com/softw/80free/update/avginfowin.ctf0/2

I’ve tried this with both Firefox
And the error msg sez: Interrupted

With IE, it sez: Cannot display

Looks like a problem with the url?

    Anyone, Please
    Thanx,
    Anne

    This is my 3rd post.
Just in case others are having an update problem, may consider holding off on the uninstall/install options. I feel it’s on their end.

I went to the avg free forum below:
    http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?12,154866,backpage=,sv=

    The following was posted today:

“I believe the update servers are either overloaded, being worked on or having other issues at this time.”

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, AVG just accepted my update!!!

Guess they resolved THEIR problem…Which resolved MINE!

If anyone else is experiencing the same issue, try manually upgrading now.

All companies who rely on the Internet have problems from time to time. Today was AVG’s day. Their server was down for quite a few hours today, but that does NOT mean that you aren’t protected. It just means that you didn’t get today’s updates as quickly as normal. Don’t panic, the servers came up later this afternoon and all is well again.

    Greetings!

When I try to download the most recent version update, I get the message that a bin file is missing. I reinstalled the program and it still comes up with it. The virus definitions and such are working just fine, but can’t seem to download the version update.

Any ideas on what I can do to solve this?
    Thanks!

AVG seems to have this or similar problems occasionally. Wait a while – usually just a few hours; they will fix it.

    G’day,
a few weeks ago my avg stopped scanning at the time I set. Now the buttons to set the schedules are greyed out. I have gone to help site and dloaded all the avg8 updates again…. still the same.
maybe uninstall and get new avg8 eh?

  94. Rick says:

That would be the next best option.

I have used AVG Free for months now and it has worked really well. Suddenly, yesterday, it started giving an “e-mail scanner not active”. Thus far I can’t see any way to solve this problem. Updates don’t clear the problem. You got the same problem (along with several others) on an October 17 submission. Got any ideas???

In Version 8 if you have the email scanner turned on every email is scanned which is good, but each has an AVG Email Certification. This in my opinion is not so good, because each then shows that it has an attachment. As a result if you are looking for an email with an attachment, it doesn’t stand out because every email appears to have an attachment. Is there any way to turn the certificate off while leaving the email scanner on?

  98. Rick says:

Double-click your AVG, Click Tools –> Advanced Settings and you can choose what works for you in the Email Scanner –> Certification area.

Thanks for the tip. That extra attachment has been bugging me for years.

Try the method I outlined on January 19 below. IF that doesn’t work, you will need to reinstall AVG.

    Cookie here,
I have tried to uninstall AVG so I can re-install it
hoping that it will resolve my ‘email-scanner’ problem..
but am unable to uninstall. Always ‘unable to complete
un-install because of an ID error.
    What can I do?

  103. Rick says:

Fortunately, in cases like yours, AVG provides a removal tool that will do the job for you. Click here and download the 32 bit removal tool and then you can start over.

I use Windows XP & have the AVG Free 8 system (installed by my son). The LInkScanner has suddenly stopped ticking websites after a google search (& other search engines) and has replaced it with the question mark & the ‘Search Shield was unable to search this page’ message. I have not changed anything that I am aware of – do you have any ideas what might have happened? Thank you in advance for any help you can give. Celia

I have the free version of AVG 8.0 on a 64-bit Vista Home Premium OS and after a recent automatic update, the web-shield component tells me to restart my web browser or it will remain disabled. Simple enough yes? but there’s a catch. I have no web-browsers active. I didn’t when it updated and I don’t when i check the interface. It tells me each time I start up the computer to restart my web browser if i want it to work, but I’ve no web browser to restart. What does it think I have active?

    Hi,

Apoligies if this has been asked already I started reading through the pages but got bored.
Im running avg free 8 on current vista 64 home premium.

I seem to be stuck in a bit of a restart loop (for lack of better term) where I turn on my pc, let it sit for about 2 mis, then avg update manager pops up wanting a restart, I click all the update things and restart then the same thing happens again! I been around the ‘loop’ about 5 times now…

This seems (I dont remember exactly) to have happened only after I restarted following my downloading a thing from microsoft to try to get some old help files to work on vista. The plugin came from a link in a help file that couldnt open properly and went straight to MS website.

    HELP?! please,

    Thanks in advance,
    Michael.

  123. Rick says:

Follow the steps above and REPAIR will be one of your options during the install.

  124. Rick says:

Restart your computer in Safe Mode, then run a full AVG scan there…restart your computer and try re-updating or re-installing AVG.
