Any Gmail users out there?
As I move more and more of my computing away from my desktop computer to the Internet and Ubuntu, my computing life becomes less complicated and quite mobile. I can access documents, calendar information, contact information, and more from my phone (Treo 755p at the moment) and any Internet connected computer any where I happen to be.
The one looming part of my desktop computer that I can't move completely to the web yet is my email. I use Microsoft Outlook to retrieve, sort, save, and filter spam (via Cloudmark Desktop) coming from five different email addresses. It's not necessarily the Outlook that I hate to leave behind because I can check my email from anywhere via web mail. Cloudmark Desktop keeps me tethered to my desk because it does such a fantastic job of separating the spam from my real email.
This is why I need input from Gmail users. I want to learn from Gmail users who truly "get" Google's unique approach to email and can give me first hand knowledge of how effective labels and searching email works in Gmail versus sorting email into folders in traditional email services and applications. And even more importantly, how effective is the Gmail spam filter?

If gmail cuts into spam that well, I wish that Outlook express would take a few lessons from them!
Why is it that I cannot create a rule that works???
ie, "Only accept mail from those in my contact list"
If AOL can do it, why cant all other programs do as well???

I hate to be blunt, but it is true. Yes, you can do exactly what you want to do in Outlook Express by using our tip outlined here. And you can search our site for the phrase "email filter" to get another three or four additional tips. OR, you could search our site for the word "Cloudmark" for the best solution hands down.

I dont dispute your statement at all. However, it appears if someone is not approved, the mail bounces back. It's a long story. But I wasnt spamming, and my mail was not accepted. I had to advise the individual, whereas they added my email to their accept list.
I had no luck with the 13 step tip outline. Since mail comes thru via my email addy on it. I wish to insert a rule that does NOT accept anyone NOT in my contact list. I've done the blocking feature. That list has become so long it's ridiculous.

G-mail is great, i've been using it for about 2 years now and it has been my favorite app!, It certainly is better than yahoo mail(my Opinion). and with the colored labels its easy to put that stamp on whatever you want to save. and thanks for your great site i check it often.

I've used it for about a year. After a granddaughter recommended it, I thought about it. Then Thunderbird somehow got sick in the chrome files and made my entire e-mail messages, address book and contacts totally inaccessible.
Went to Gmail and vowed never to rely on e-mail and documents resident on a hard drive again. Gmail works great.
SPAM folder initially got filled up a lot in the beginning. Each day I would check SPAM folder, move an occasional non-spam to the inbox. The system learns very well for now there's very little SPAM, 1 or 2 a day or so [and I do a lot of research and link clicking].
Labels work well. Only hope Google gets around to enable nesting of folders. [Sub folders that is.]
Give it a go whirl. I think you'll like it.Also, it is not specific computer dependent.

I like it because I can access it from my sprint phone. The chat within your email is a very nice feature. I've only have one spam problem and that is the junk sent from craigslist. Other than that minor issue, I love it better than yahoo or hotmail.

Gmail is free, so just jump in and try it, you won't regret it. I have yet to get spammed, but then I don't do much emailing, so I wouldn't make a good test case, but I've had since it started, so that's still a pretty good track record.

Gmail's GREAT!
I, too, have used Gmail for about two years and I absolutely love it. I use the account more or less as my "second level" e-mail -- the one I give out to people and companies I think I can trust. I have labels set up for family, friends, Netflix and my airline miles and hotel points programs. I don't utilize them a lot, but it is nice to be able to click through them and see everything sorted when I need it.
I try to archive important stuff, but other than that, I'm pretty lazy about it. Searching is fast and efficient. The spam filter is the best I've ever seen -- even though it wrestled the Help Me Rick Newsletter to the ground and held it there for so long I forgot you guys had one! On occasion, somebody gets around the spam filter, but it happens maybe once a month. I can't imagine going back to anything else, and, in fact, I hate checking my old Yahoo and Hotmail accounts now.

I have been using Gmail since 2005. I sort the mail using labels and archiving. The search feature is very handy. Sure, it is different, but I found I like it the best of all my email accounts. The Spam "folder" has been very accurate keeping the junk out of my Inbox. I check it ocassionally in case legimate mail gets into it, but that is rare and once I tell Gmail it is not Spam, it does not happen again. I like it so I think you may want to give it a try too.

I have never had a spam on gmail, but I do not understand how it is different than Yahoo or other services. Sue
